The Belgian goalkeeper foiled Perez in extra-time and then Gaya in the shoot-out

Real Madrid needed penalties to reach the Spanish Super Cup final, where they will face Barcelona or Real Betis.

Carlo Ancelotti's side relied on goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who made impressive saves and then denied Jose Gaya decisively from the spot, after Eray Comert had already fired one spot-kick over the bar.

Gennaro Gattuso's side gave as good as they got, but fell behind when Comert fouled Karim Benzema, who dispatched the penalty.

Valencia levelled when Toni Lato crossed for Samuel Lino to finish well from close range.

Los Che's stopper Georgi Mamardashvili made good saves to keep Toni Kroos and Vinicius Junior out, while Courtois made a great save to foil Perez in extra-time.

"It was a difficult game without much rhythm from either team, it was hard for us, but the important thing is that we're in the final and going for another trophy," said Asensio.

"We had set up to go into the second half with intensity and the goal set us back. The ball didn't go in but we are happy and where we want to be."
