Luis Enrique: The normal thing would have been to kill the players at the break
The Spain coach suffered his first loss against since taking charge against England
Luis Enrique admitted Spain's first half against England was awful but wasn't too put out by his first coach as La Roja boss.
England raced into a three-goal lead at the break but Spain fought back in the second half with goals from Paco Alcacer and Sergio Ramos.
Ramos' effort came in stoppage time, though, and it was too late for Spain to save a point in this UEFA Nations League clash.
After three straight wins, it's the first setback of the Luis Enrique era.
"It was not our best night, that's clear," Luis Enrique said in his postgame press conference. "The first half was rawful, we have to recognise that.
"It's shame we couldn't give the fans a complete performance. We had hoped we wouldn't suffer so much. We pressed late and the first goal killed us. That was medicine for them and a blow for us. They were then effective with their three chances. The first half was painful.
"But everything has a positive: it was a good second half. Ball circulation improved, we pressed better, pushed them back into their area. We had chances to come back."
Luis Enrique said he chose not to be critical of his players at the break in search of a reaction.
"Each coach has their own method," he added. "The normal thing would have been to kill the players at the break but I was wonderful with them. I encouraged them, I didn't change anything.
"I told them great national teams are made by suffering. We pushed them back after that. It is a shame we didn't get second goal earlier because I'm sure the supporters would have scored the third."
