Players surprised by Montse Tome's first Spain squad

| sport

Montse Tomé's first squad in the midst of the biggest crisis in the history of Spanish women's football went off like a bombshell. The new coach went ahead with a top-draw list, made up of fifteen of the World Cup champions plus Mapi León, Patri Guijarro and Amaiur Sarriegi, who withdrew from selection ahead of the tournament.

Misa, Cata Coll and Enith Salón -the same three goalkeepers to start with. Paredes, Oihane, Olga Carmona, Ona Batlle are the defenders. Aitana, Alexia, Maria Pérez, Tere Abelleira, are the midfielders. Athenea, Esther, Eva Navarro and Mariona are the attackers who went to the World Cup in the squad. There are two new faces, Rosa Márquez and María Méndez. One who was on the pre-list, Inma Gabarro. And the big 'surprise': Mapi Leon, Patri Guijarro, Amaiur Sarriegi, Aleixandri and Lucia Garcia, although the latter two did not attend the World Cup by technical decision.

However, Jenni Hermoso is absent, and the new coach did not want to talk about her at the press conference afterwards because "it's the best way to protect her".

The general feeling among the called-up players is one of astonishment, as they did not respond to the RFEF's email on Sunday with an ultimatum and understood that they were still ineligible for selection. According to SPORT, although Montse Tomé has said that she has spoken to them, several of the players - at least - did not expect it because she did not communicate it to them privately before giving the list.

Furthermore, the Federation's last communiqué ended with "we guarantee a safe environment for the players and we are committed to a climate of mutual trust so that we can work together and ensure that women's football continues to progress much more strongly".

We will see which players attend the training camp on Tuesday. If they don't, they could face serious consequences such as the temporary withdrawal of their federation licence - between two and fifteen years - and a fine. It's open war.
