The Real Madrid centre-back is among the candidates to win the prize

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane says he will not fight with his France teammates over the Ballon d'Or, an award he feels he's a legitimate contender for after a "golden season" for club and country.

"There won't be problems between us, it wouldn't be right to fight over the Ballon d'Or. If a French player wins it, we will be happy, whoever it is," he said in an interview with France Football.

Varane said that to win the award, among them Real Madrid colleague Luka Modric, "French or not, are friends" so he will be "happy" in any event.

The centre-back, who won the Champions League and the World Cup, feels he's done "everything possible" to win the prize in an "extraordinary season."

He added: "It's been a golden season, with what's happened on the pitch. If I put myself in the shoes of those that vote, it's not easy. There are a lot of extraordinary players that have had magnificent seasons.

"I don't think [winning] would transform me. I feel I have qualities as a leader... I'm already flattered that people even speak about me, that they recognise what I'm doing."
