VAR controversy returns as Sevilla denied goal at Bernabeu
Martínez Munuera ruled out De Jong's header after consulting pitchside monitor
The most controversial moment of the first half of Real Madrid's game against Sevilla on Saturday came when Luuk de Jong had a goal ruled out by VAR.
De Jong thought he had opened the scoring at the Santiago Bernabeu but his joy turned to dismay moments later when the referee chalked his header off.
After consulting the pitchside monitor, official Juan Martínez Munuera ruled that Nemanja Gudel had blocked Éder Militão, which allowed De Jong a free header.
Munuera had been alerted to a possible infraction by the VAR, but they had been unable to make a definitive decision.
The final decision was harsh on Sevilla with luck once again following Madrid. Gudel could have done very little to get out of the way of Militão, who ran into him.
