RFEF chief wants Spanish Super Cup expanded to four teams & played abroad
Rubiales announced his plans on Tuesday and hopes to have them approved by the summer
The president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) wants to change the format of the Spanish Super Cup by expanding the teams taking part from two to four and taking the games abroad.
Luis Rubiales says the overhaul could even happen this year after last year's Super Cup between Barcelona and Sevilla was played as a one-off game in Morocco.
The usual format for the Spanish Super Cup sees the La Liga champions take on the Copa del Rey winners over two legs. If the league and cup winners are the same team -- as has been the case with Barcelona in three of the last four seasons -- then the cup runners-up take part.
Under Rubiales' new proposals, the top two teams in La Liga and the two Copa del Rey finalists would all take part in a 'Final Four' style Super Cup. There would be three games: two semifinals and a final (no third place playoff).
In addition, the RFEF chief says the games would all be played outside of Spain.
