Diego Simeone extends Atletico Madrid contract until 2020
The club announced the surprise renewal of their coach on Tuesday
There were doubts whether he would continue beyond 2018
Diego Simeone will continue as Atletico Madrid coach until, at least, June of 2020 after the club announced on Tuesday that the Argentine has renewed his contract, which was due to end in 2018.
"The renewal of Diego Simeone is now a reality. Our coach has signed a new contract which links him to Atletico Madrid for two more seasons, until June 30, 2020," the club said on their official website/
The contract may have a clause allowing Simeone to rescind it
There has been doubts about Simeone's future in recent months. He has been linked with ex-club Inter Milan, who would be prepared to offer him a blank check to take over the team and also with Lazio, another of his former sides.
Simeone had originally reduced his contract a year, but has now extended it again and this season will take charge of Atletico as they begin a new chapter at the Wanda Metropolitano after leaving the Vicente Calderon.
