UEFA's president confirmed that they will begin to use VAR next season, starting with UEFA Super Cup

VAR won't be used in the UEFA Champions League until the 2019/20 season despite the fact it's been widely rolled out across the biggest leagues in Europe following the success at the World Cup in Russia.

"The plan is to use it from next season, in the knockout rounds and in the UEFA Super Cup match in Istanbul. It isn't easy. We need to organise this competition across the continent alongside the referees," UEFA's president Aleksander Ceferin confirmed.

In his opinion, to put VAR in action "is more problematic in this type of competition than in a World Cup" because it's played in many different countries which could impact television broadcasts and it's necessary to focus on certain aspects of the technology first.

"For me VAR isn't completely clear right now, but there's no going back. There are situations when it isn't clear. At the World Cup I believe it went well but we'll see how it works. I don't know if it'll need some changes in the future."
