Former UEFA president Michel Platini has been detained for questioning on Tuesday regarding the awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar, according to reports in Mediapart and Reuters.

The ex-France captain, who has already declared as part of the investigation and has always denied any wrongdoing, is being questioned in Paris.

Meanwhile, Claude Gueant, the former secretary general of the Elysee Palace under the presidency of Nicolas Sarkozy, is also being interviewed as a “free suspect”.

The investigation seeks to establish links and contracts between France and Qatar which may have come about as a result of Platini's decision to vote for the World Cup to take place in Qatar.
