Kylian Mbappe will get the France armband ahead of Antoine Griezmann
Former captain Hugo Lloris retired from international duty and Deschamps had a choice to make
France now have a new point of reference for their project. Kylian Mbappe takes over from Hugo Lloris as captain of Didier Deschamps' national team and will wear the armband at the age of 24, after 66 caps for Les Bleus. The PSG striker will take on the responsibility of leading the team to another trophy, after winning the World Cup in 2018.
According to L'Équipe, the former Monaco man will immediately become captain of the team and will wear the armband for the matches against the Netherlands and Ireland in this week's break. It is the definitive sign that places Mbappé as the leader to follow in this national team.
Atletico Madrid's 'Little Prince', Antoine Griezmann, has been relegated to the background. It is not easy to be ahead of a superstar like Mbappé, who hogs the limelight with France, and Griezmann can see that despite having more caps than the PSG player (116 to 66), the armband is for the No 10. Hugo Lloris, who was captain until now, announced his retirement from the national team a few months ago.
The Atletico Madrid striker was instrumental in France's run to the final of the last World Cup, becoming the team's leader from midfield. He has a total of 42 goals in his 117 caps to Mbappé's 36 goals in 66 appearances.
