The Benfica president explained Mourinho rejected the idea

Benfica president Luís Filipe Vieira has confirmed that Jose Mourinho turned down the chance to coach the club. After Rui Vitoria was sacked at the start of the year, the Benfica chief got in contact with Mourinho to offer him the job. He says the coach didn't want to come back to Portugal and didn't even bother negotiating over the role.

In the end B team coach Bruno Lage took over.

"In that moment I told Bruno Lage that he would not be the coach if Mourinho accepted," said the president. "We didn't negotiate, I know the conversations I had with him. Lage said that if we hired him, he would go himself to pick him up from the airport."
