England 2-1 Croatia: Kane's late goal knocks Spain out of UEFA Nations League

The Three Lions progress as group winners, while Croatia are relegated

England reached the finals of the UEFA Nations League next summer with a 2-1 win over Croatia which saw the World Cup runners-up relegated.

Jesse Lingard and Harry Kane scored late in the second half after Andrej Kramaric had given Croatia a 57th minute lead at Wembley.

The result means England progress in the newly-founded tournament, with Spain finishing second and maintaining their place in the top division of nations.

However, Croatia, beaten in the World Cup final by France after knocking England out in the semifinal, drop into the second tier of the competition.

Spain looked odds on to top the group after beating England and hammering Croatia in their first two games but back-to-back losses against the same sides left Luis Enrique's men hoping for a draw in Sunday's game in London.

Any draw would have seen Luis Enrique's side finish top. A goalless draw would have seen Croatia relegated, while a score draw would have sent England down.

Gareth Southgate's side impressed in the first half, dominating possession, but they were unable to find the breakthrough. Kane and Raheem Sterling both missed good chances.

Croatia's opener came somewhat against the run of play. Kramaric received in the ball in the area and despite the presence of four home defenders, he managed to twist and turn his way out of trouble, with his deflected shot finding the top corner.

Southgate reacted by brining on Dele Alli, Lingard and Jadon Sancho as England looked to turn the game around.

For all they had created from open play, it was set pieces -- their strength at the World Cup -- which helped them win the match.

Joe Gomez's long throw found Kane at the far post and his shot was turned over the line by substitute Lingard. The Manchester United midfielder's goal brought England level but they were still bottom of the group.

They went from last place to first, though, in the 87th minute when Kane scored his first goal since the World Cup, turning home Ben Chilwell's free kick.

The finals, set to be played in Porto, will take place next June and will feature the four nations who top the four Group A leagues. England and Portugal are the only sides currently through.
