The Belgium and Real Madrid forward has called time on his international career

Belgium's Eden Hazard has announced his retirement from international football after exiting the World Cup at the group stage.

After finishing third in 2018, Belgium failed to get out of the group this time, finishing behind Croatia and Morocco, who have both gone on to make the quarterfinals.

Hazard, 31, has subsequently decided to call time on his career with his country to focus on club football.

"A page turns today," he posted on social media. "Thank you for your love. Thank you for your unparalleled support. Thank you for all this happiness shared since 2008."

He then confirmed: "I have decided to put an end to my international career. The succession is ready. I will miss you."

Hazard returns to Real Madrid but his future is likely to be away from the Santiago Bernabeu given his lack of game time at the Spanish club under Carlo Ancelotti.
