The right-back was downbeat after Rakitic's goal earned Barça the points

Dani Carvajal has given up on winning La Liga after Real Madrid were beaten 1-0 by Barcelona on Saturday at the Bernabeu.

Ivan Rakitic's first half goal means third-placed Madrid are now 12 points behind the Catalans, who sit at the top of the table with 12 games to go.

"They scored, we didn't and La Liga's gone for us," Carvajal said after Madrid's second loss to Barcelona in just four days. "The games were similar. In the Copa del Rey, the result inflated. And tonight there were chances for both teams."

The right-back didn't hide his anger at the defeat: "We're not going to throw in the towel but it's almost definitive. [The defeat] fucks us because it was a great opportunity to get back [in the title race]."

Barça's back-to-back wins at the Bernabeu follow Girona's success there and Carvajal continued: "You don't count on losing three straight games at home. We can only thank the fans, because they have supported us.

"I don't think we deserved to lose these games against Barça, but this is football and you have to take your chances and score goals."
