The Barça midfielder wasn't impressed with the surface on Saturday

Barcelona vice captain Sergio Busquets criticised the state of the pitch at the Jose Zorrilla and praised the role of VAR in his side's 1-0 win over Real Valladolid on Saturday.

"With the pitch like it was it was really hard to play," he said. "It’s lamentable that the best league in the world is played in these conditions. There were areas that seemed more like a beach.

“It's incredible that no one from La Liga felt they should come and check the grass. You can’t play on that -- although it was the same for both teams."

On the game, Busquets said that "Valladolid made things difficult. We struggled, to be honest. In the first half we were superior and we had patience. However, the second half was more up and down and we suffered because at 0-1 they pushed us back."

THE FAIRNESS OF VAR

Valladolid almost nicked a point at the end but Keko Gontan's header was ruled offside by VAR.

"Fortunately, their goal wasn't legal," Busquets said. "VAR is the fairest thing in football. Sometime it goes in your favour, other times it goes for the opposition."

On two wins from two in the league, he finished: "We have started well in La Liga, with six points. That's the way we have to keep moving."
