PSG's director of football admits they were interested in the defender but that they can't afford to spend so much on just one position

Due to discrepancies over the final transfer fee, Matthijs de Ligt's future remains undefined and he was forced to return to training with Ajax on Monday. However, one place de Ligt won't be playing next season is Paris. Leonardo, the new director of football at PSG, has confirmed in an interview with 'Le Parisien' that the club has withdrawn their bid for the young defender.

"De Ligt won't come to PSG. There was a chance (at one point). He's an incredible player but it wasn't a good moment to make such a huge investment. We need to remain calm. We don't have €200m to just spend like that," Leonardo confirmed.

The Ajax captain returned to preseason training on Monday as he awaits for developments on his move to Juventus.

Mino Raiola, the player's agent, confirmed there was an agreement in place between de Ligt and Juventus but that the two sides were still some way apart in their valuations.

Josep Maria Bartomeu announced a few days ago that he knew where de Ligt would be playing next season but wouldn't reveal where out of respect for the clubs involved.
