It’s surprising to see a player like Jeremy Mathieu, under contract at Barça, training with another club. It’s even more surprising when the player is on trial as if he was a youth team player. But Jeremy Mathieu, still officially a Barça player is training with Sporting Lisbon. Mathieu landed in Lisbon on Sunday afternoon and started training with the club on Monday.
This curious situation can be explained by two things: firstly the unusual working methods of Jorge Jesus, Sporting’s manager. He wants to get to know Mathieu and see how he trains before committing to a transfer fee.
Secondly, the pictures of Mathieu training with Sporting Lisbon put pressure on Barça to let him leave on a free transfer. Barça want €1.5-2 million for the player but Sporting do not want to pay a fee. The clubs are still negotiating but they are confident in Lisbon of reaching an agreement.
