16 years have passed since Rexach 'signed' Messi for Barcelona

History was made in the bar of a tennis club by Charly Rexach on this day in December 2000

On this day, 16 years ago, Lionel Messi said 'yes' to FC Barcelona. It happened in a bar and it was improvised, but that informal meeting would end up being the Argentine's first step as an Azulgrana.

In a meeting between Carles Rexach, Josep Maria Minguella and Horacio Gaggioli (Messi's representative at the time) at the Pompeia Tennis Club on Dec. 14, 2000, Rexach committed Barça to the signing of the young Messi.

"In Barcelona, Dec. 14, 2000, and in the presence of Mr. Minguella and Mr. Horacio, Carles Rexach, FC Barcelona sporting director, commit to the signing of Lionel Messi despite some opinions against [the signing] as and when we have the figures agreed," wrote Rexach on a napkin which was then signed by the player, too, with the OK of his family.

That move by Rexach was key in Messi's signing for Barça. Leo had spent two weeks training with the club and had taken a decision. 'Charly' organised a training match at the time. After arriving with the game underway, he asked: "Who is that?" The response quickly came: "That kid from Argentina, Messi." Rexach said: "We have to sign him now."

Leo and his father returned to Argentina waiting an answer and the passing of days left Messi further away from the club. Until Rexach took the bull by the horns and took the decision which would change the history of the club.
