Wales 1-1 USA: Gareth Bale saves his team with late penalty

| sport

The British minnows were back at the World Cup for the first time since 1958

Gareth Bale bashed home a penalty to ensure Wales started their World Cup campaign with a deserved point after USA had taken the lead through Tim Weah.

“A million percent (he was going to take the penalty), he's never let us down. Once against it's all about Bale,” said Wales coach Rob Page.

It was their first World Cup game since 1958 and it nearly ended in a loss before Walker Zimmerman brought down the Welsh wing wizard.

The draw leaves England in control of the group after their battering of Iran earlier in the day.

Wales fans belted out the anthem but their team was far less convincing in the first half.

Christian Pulisic set up Weah to strike the opener.

Kiefffer Moore came off the bench and helped turn the game around, giving Wales a focal point up top.

However it was Bale penalty that ensured they took something from the match.
