Qatar 0-2 Ecuador: Valencia brace downs hosts in World Cup opener

Ecuador were too good for Qatar at the World Cup kicked off on Sunday

Qatar became the first host nation to lose the opening World Cup game as they were beaten 2-0 in the 2022 opener on Sunday.

Enner Valencia scored twice to secure a comfortable victory for the South American side in Group A, which also includes the Netherlands and Senegal.

Valencia had a third-minute header ruled out by VAR before opening the scoring from the penalty spot in the 16th minute after being fouled himself.

The Fenerbahce striker added the second just after the half-hour mark and Ecuador never looked like losing the game from there.

Asian champions Qatar never got going despite promising form going into the tournament and have it all to do against the Netherlands and Senegal, who meet on Monday, to get out of the group.
