Poland 0-0 Mexico: Lewandowski misses penalty in World Cup opener

The Barcelona striker also missed one against Almeria two weeks ago

Robert Lewandowski missed a penalty as Poland were held to a goalless draw by Mexico in their World Cup opener.

Lewandowski has never scored at a World Cup but he was handed the chance to make amends in Qatar in the second half only to see his spot kick saved by Guillermo Ochoa.

The striker, who has netted 76 times for his country previously, has now missed his last two penalties having spurned one just before the international break for Barça against Almeria.

The miss against Mexico proved costly as Poland dropped two points in what is likely to be the battle for second place after France beat Australia 4-1 in the group's other game.

Other than that, it was a fairly cagey game. Mexico enjoyed plenty of the ball but failed to turn that domination into many chances.

Wojciech Szczesny made saves from Jesus Gallardo and Henry Martin, while a Jorge Sanchez deflected effort sailed over the bar.
