England might have forced the game to extra-time but Kane ballooned over from the spot

England are out of the World Cup, at the hands of France, and it came down to a Harry Kane penalty.

The Spurs striker, who had already bagged one from the spot, somehow ballooned over the bar when he could have forced extra-time.

Gareth Southgate’s men gave as good as they got in the clash which sees France progress to face surprise package Morocco in the semi-finals.

England coach Southgate said: "I'm so proud of what the players have done, not just tonight but through the whole tournament.

"I think the team has taken a real step forward in all areas."

Kane equalled Wayne Rooney’s England goals record with 53 but it was a painful evening for the forward after he blew his second spot kick.

Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni sent France ahead with a long range bullet into the bottom corner, but Kane levelled from the spot after Bukayo Saka was felled.

The Arsenal forward was taken down by Tchouameni and Kane made no mistake from the spot — no, that was to follow.

France took the lead again though Olivier Giroud, after poor defending by Harry Maguire, but when Mason Mount was fouled, Kane could have levelled.

Instead he found Row Z and that was that again for the Three Lions.

France pass on to face more lions, of the Atlas variety.
