The Catalan will not extend his contract with the Belgian national team

Belgium coach Robert Martinez confirmed he will leave his role after the Red Devils were knocked out of the World Cup at the group stage.

A goalless draw against Croatia on Thursday was not enough to keep them in the competition after a win against Canada and a loss to Morocco.

The stalemate took Croatia through as runners-up, while Morocco progressed as group winners.

"It's an emotional moment for me," said Martinez, who led Belgium to a third-placed finish at the World Cup in Russia four years ago.

"I am someone who likes to learn from lessons. It's been six years. I was committed to this project. We came third in Russia and we had to give another chance to this project.

"I have enjoyed it a lot. I have left a great legacy and am satisfied with the result. This was going to be the end no matter what. It is the end of a cycle and it is not related to going out now.

"I took the decision before the World Cup. I think projects have to be long-term. Since Russia, I have had many opportunities to return to club management, but I have always been loyal to Belgium.

"I am not resigning, I am coming to the end of my project and this was always the plan."
