The South Americans went through top, the Europeans finished second

Argentina made it to the World Cup last 16 with a 2-0 win over Poland on Wednesday, although their opponents also went through.

Alexis Mac Allister and Julian Alvarez struck for the Albiceleste, while Lionel Messi won a cheap penalty and then missed it.

Wojciech Szczesny made a fine stop to palm Messi’s penalty away, after he had been incredibly harshly penalised for trying to palm the ball away and then making contact with Messi.

Argentina shall face Australia in the last 16 after they beat Denmark to go through second in their group.

Messi’s side won their group on goal difference ahead of Poland.
