The former Arsenal coach is poised to take over the Yellow Submarine

Coach Javi Calleja will not stay on next season at Villarreal, despite taking the club to a fifth place finish.

"Javi Calleja will stop being Villareal coach," said the club in a statement on Monday. "The Yellows thank him for his work, dedication and professionalism during his era as coach and wish him the best in his sporting career."

He took charge of 131 games, earning 57 wins, 30 draws and 44 defeats. This season they came fifth after a great spell after the coronavirus break.

Unai Emery has been linked as a replacement, with the former Sevilla man out of work since leaving Arsenal earlier in the season.

Calleja was sacked by Villarreal last season but then quickly brought back in.
