The Brazil international has been detained on allegations of sexual assault

Dani Alves will remain in prison after he was denied bail on Tuesday.

The Brazilian footballer has been held on remand since Jan. 20 on allegations of sexual assault.

His legal team had appealed the original decision to deny him bail but learned they were unsuccessful on Tuesday.

The judge ruled that Alves, a Brazilian national, remains a flight risk.

Alves is alleged to have sexually assaulted a woman in a nightclub in Barcelona on Dec. 30.

The former Barcelona defender has denied any wrongdoing but based on witness statements, CCTV footage from the nightclub and biological results carried out on the alleged victim, the judge decided he should be detained.

The investigation continues. There is no trial date yet.
