Xavi Hernandez criticises Julen Lopetegui's decision

He says the timing of Madrid move was inopportune, unexpected and rushed

The reaction continues to pour in following Julen Lopetegui's decision to take on the Real Madrid job, which has subsequently seen him sacked as Spain coach by RFEF chief Luis Rubiales. Everyone has their own take on the situation...

Former Barcelona player Xavi Hernandez, for example, has openly criticised the coach and applauded the decision taken by the RFEF. In quotes to Marca, Xavi's said that "Lopetegui's decision, for me, was inopportune, unexpected and rushed. It was a surprise to everyone, but Rubiales reacted really well. He's looked at the RFEF, which must always be above any one person."

However, Xavi didn't criticise Madrid. "I'm not the person to opine on Real Madrid, but as an ex-played I believe the RFEF took the right decision." And on Lopetegui's replacement, Fernando Hierro, he believes he "is a well-prepared person to take charge of the national team. He helped us a lot in 2010 when we lose the first game 0-1 against Switzerland."

Finally, on Spain's chances at the World Cup, he added: "It's not the best scenario, but I hope it doesn't affect the national team. Within the team there are people that can manage this episode well. I wish the team a lot of luck and for me, despite everything that's happened, Spain are still a firm candidate to win the tournament."
