Real Madrid won't have to pay Lopetegui's release clause
The RFEF sacking the coach has saved Madrid two million euros
The news announced by Luis Rubiales on Wednesday, firing Julen Lopetegui as Spain coach two days before La Roja kick off the World Cup against Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal, means Real Madrid won't have to pay the two million euro release clause in the former Porto coach's contract.
After being sacked, the now former Spain coach is a free man with the possibility to sign for any club that wishes to appoint him without any payment being made to the RFEF.
Real Madrid announced that Lopetegui would be their new coach on Tuesday. The RFEF has no idea that was to be the case until five minutes before Los Blancos published the statement on their website -- something which went down like a jar of cold water over RFEF chief Rubiales.
Lopetegui had signed a new deal with Spain last month until 2020, with a release clause of two million euros. A payment that Madrid were prepared to pay after the World Cup. However, he can now take over at Madrid without the need for that payment to be made and, after being sacked, he can now focus on his new job.
