Spain 2-0 Scotland: Morata and Sancet strike in Euro 2024 qualifier

Alvaro Morata’s diving header and a scrappy Oihan Sancet goal gave Spain a win in Seville and revenge over Scotland, putting La Roja within touching distance of the 2024 Euros in Germany.

It was a controversial victory because of a disallowed Scott McTominay free-kick strike.

It found the top corner but the referee eventually ruled it out, seemingly for a foul on Unai Simon, but later it transpired to be for offside against Hendry.

Rodri was whistled by visiting Scotland fans for his words after the Glasgow beating handed out by Steve Clarke’s side, but Spain got their revenge here.

Ferran Torres missed a good chance in the first minute, Morata headed wide, Mikel Merino hit the post and then Morata had a goal ruled out for offside.

However they couldn’t find a breakthrough and McTominay did, until it was ruled out.

Then Morata headed home from Jesus Navas’ cross to put Luis de la Fuente’s side ahead and Sancet’s debut strike wrapped things up, even if he knew little about it.

"You need to be very careful what you say. I think everyone watching that game tonight from a Scotland point of view, wherever you were, it just felt like we weren't getting any 50:50 decision -- it made it very difficult against a world class team,” complained John McGinn.

"He (the referee) changed it (his explanation) in the game, which is the annoying thing. It means it's not clear and obvious.”
