Spain 1-2 Switzerland: Bad defending at set pieces costs La Roja

They suffered their first home defeat in four years at La Romareda in Zaragoza

Spain were beaten at home for the first time in nearly four years as Switzerland helped Portugal move top of Group A2 in the Nations League.

It was two corners that led to two goals that did for Luis Enrique’s team, with Manuel Akanju and later Breel Embolo scoring.

Jordi Alba, who does not have a starting spot for his club, did score for his country in the one real moment of spark that Spain offered.

He was set up by Marco Asensio, another that doesn’t get regular football with Real Madrid.

Luis Enrique defended his team, admitting the first half was the worst of his reign but saying he had complete faith in the side ahead of the World Cup.

The last time Spain were beaten at home was 3-2 by England in 2018.

Six Barcelona players started, with Ferran Torres, Pedro, Busquets, Gavi and Eric Garcia the others, beyond goalscorer Alba.

Now they are two points behind Portugal and must beat them in Braga if they want to reach the Nations League final four.
