Spain 1-1 Greece: Pedri not enough in stale draw

The Barca kid made his debut as a sub but Morata's goal did not suffice

Pedri came on to make his debut for Spain but it was not a good night for La Roja, as they tied with Greece in their opening qualifying match for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

Alvaro Morata sent Spain ahead in Granada as they dominated the ball with over 80 per cent possession, but they weren’t able to add to their lead, managing a total of two shots on target in the game.

Anastasios Bakasetas smashed home from the penalty spot to earn a draw for the visiting Greeks.

Inigo Martinez had fouled Gorges Masouras, according to the officials, but the player wasn’t having it.

"I’m not at all happy, the draw means little to us," said Martinez, who conceded the penalty. "With VAR the result would have been different.

"It was a 50-50 and I could not stop, I tried to take my leg away. The opponent was smart and hit the ground.

"The penalty was key to the draw and we paid a high price for it. We have to pick ourselves up and continue onwards."

Pedri, on the other hand, was happy to play for the first time but also didn’t like the draw.

"I would have liked to have made my debut in another way, but it’s a dream," he said.

"I’m happy about that but not about the draw. There wasn’t much space in the middle, we lacked fluidity in our play.

"With a bit more rhythm it might have gone better, we didn’t know how to break them down. We have to forget about this game now and go for wins in the other two."
