Barcelona midfielder Sergi Roberto returned to Spain action on Saturday after going two years without playing for the national team.

The man from Reus came on for former club team-mate Thiago Alcántara in the 80th minute of the 2-1 UEFA Nations League win over England at Wembley.

It was his first appearance for Spain since 2016, when he played in a World Cup qualifier against Liechtenstein, scoring his only international goal to date.

Sergi Roberto came on in midfield and played a total of 20 minutes, due to a lengthy injury time because of an injury to England's Luke Shaw, in Luis Enrique's first game in charge of La Roja.

The Catalan has now played four times for Spain since making his debut on March 27, 2016 against Romania, later playing against Belgium (1 September 2016) and Liechtenstein four days later.

However, he had not played since then and was left out of the World Cup squad, but the appointment of Luis Enrique looks set to signal a change of fortune for him.
