Luis de la Fuente's new look side went down in Glasgow and it was a fair result

Luis de la Fuente’s Spain took a step back in a dismal defeat by Scotland in Glasgow on Tuesday night.

Scott McTominay netted twice for the hosts against La Roja, who could not get their act together after going behind.

After a Euro 2024 qualifying win over Norway in De la Fuente’s first game in charge, this was a setback for the 2014 World Cup winners.

McTominay blasted home early on after Andy Robertson capitalised on a Pedro Porro slip.

The Man United midfielder netted again early in the second half too, to hammer home the hosts’ advantage.

Joselu headed against the crossbar and went down in the box when he was tugged but did not get a penalty.

“I played the pass, I saw the ball was going in a good direction,” said Mikel Merino after. “I saw that he escaped the defender and that his shirt was pulled. I'd have to see it again but my first reaction is that it was a penalty."

De la Fuente made eight changes to the side that beat Norway 3-0, with only Merino, Rodri and goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga keeping their places.

No Barcelona player started the game but Gavi came on in the final stages to add some energy, albeit without bearing fruit.
