Luis Enrique: It was tough to tell Sergio Ramos my decision

The coach spoke about the tricky call he had to make to the Madrid and Spain skipper

Luis Enrique published his Euro 2020 squad list and left Sergio Ramos, the captain, out. Lucho also left two spots empty for the good of the “dynamic of the group”.

The coach explained that “we’ve seen in a championship they use 18-19 players and others don’t participate. This way, only one player will stay in the stands (23 can be in a matchday squad). I consider the group dynamic very important.”

On Sergio Ramos, whom he did not call up, Luis Enrique said: “I decided he was not coming because he hasn’t been able to compete since January in the right conditions. He’s not been able to train with the group. It’s not been easy. I told him yesterday by telephone. It’s hard and difficult. It leaves a bad taste because he’s always been at the top level, is very professional and can keep participating in the future. It’s a tough opinion but I’m doing the best for the group. I recommended him to be selfish and focus on getting his best level back.”

There were other names that Lucho mentioned who weren’t in the squad. “Carvajal, Canales, Sergi Roberto, Mikel Merino, they have helped us a lot but there’s no place for everyone.

“I know any decision with Sergio Ramos would be controversial. I know where I am and what it means to be a top level coach and I accept it as normal.”
