The Spain coach explained his side of the story, which became a soap opera

Spain coach Luis Enrique, on his official presentation upon his return to the job, has attacked his former assistant Roberto Moreno.

Moreno took over when Lucho left the job in June and helped Spain reach Euro 2020.

However Lucho says Moreno was disloyal and wanted to stay in charge for the tournament despite saying he was ready to step aside for the Asturian should he wish to return.

Luis Enrique left the job to look after his ill daughter Xana, who tragically died of bone cancer aged nine.

"I am obliged to give the explanations that you want. You know I like to avoid controversy but I have give more explanations than I would have liked," said the former Barca coach. "The only reason Robert Moreno is not among my coaching staff is me, not the president nor the sporting director."

Lucho said he met Moreno on September 12, the one day he had contact with him. "He called me and we had a 20 minute meeting in my house. He wanted to be coach until the Euros and after that I would return.

"I understand he was ambitious, that he was excited to be coach because it's the opportunity of a life time and that he has worked a lot, but for me he is disloyal, because I would never do that. For me, unchecked ambition is not a virtue but a great defect. I would not want anybody like that in my staff. I understand his decision but I do not share it."

"I told Moreno I did not see him as my assistant and that I was strong and ready to work, but I don't know when because I don't have offers in that moment. The meeting ended in a friendly way and I told the rest of my staff my opinion."

The coach wanted to clear up that "I never offered myself to the RFEF. I never called anyone nor authorised anyone to do it in my name."
