The midfielder was strangely linked with a move to the Premier League side

Former Barcelona captain Andres Iniesta has spoken to Cadena Cope, denying that he was ever approached by Pep Guardiola over a move to Manchester City.

Iniesta was always clear that he would not leave Barça for another European team, but that didn't stop rumours circulating that he could move to the Premier League champions.

"Guardiola never called me," he said. "There were zero conversations. I was leaving Barcelona to leave Europe, those reports made no sense."

Iniesta was also asked about comments from Barça president Josep Maria Bartomeu in which he said he wanted Lionel Messi's Argentine to win the World Cup.

"I understand that Bartomeu wants a national team to win where there are Barça players, but I struggle to believe that he'd pick one or another," the Spain midfielder said.

"I suppose he would be happy if Spain win it, but also if Argentina win it as well."
