France 2-1 Spain: Controversial Mbappe goal beats La Roja in Nations League final

Kylian Mbappe's controversial winning goal helped France beat Spain 2-1 on Sunday to win the UEFA Nations League at the San Siro. 

Mbappe scored the winner in the 80th minute from an offside position but, following a VAR review, was deemed to be onside due to a touch from Eric Garcia. 

Mikel Oyarzabal had earlier given Spain the lead after 64 minutes but France levelled just two minutes later through Karim Benzema. 

Hugo Loris made two important late saves to keep Spain out as France held out to win the become the second-ever country to win the Nations League after Portugal. 

Spain coach Luis Enrique handed a second successive start to 17-year-old Barcelona midfielder Gavi, with Spain dominating the first half. 

However, the lack of an out-and-out striker cost them as they failed to find the break through in the opening 45 minutes. 

France thought they had the opener in the 63rd minute but Theo Hernandez's shot hit the bar and the bounced clear, setting up a Spain break. 

Oyarzabal was played through and had a bit of luck with a ricochet before firing off a brilliant finish past Loris. 

Spain's joy was short-lived. Within two minutes, Benzema drew France level with a brilliant curling effort from outside the box which Unai Simon got a hand to but couldn't stop. 

Then came the game's big moment. Mbappe was offside when the ball was played to him but Barça defender Garcia got a touch on the ball as he tried to block it from reaching the Paris Saint-Germain striker. 

Garcia's touch wasn't enough to cut out the pass but, according to VAR, it was enough to reset the play. Mbappe was no longer deemed offside and he beat Simon. 

The decision seems absurd and may well bring consequences as Mbappe clearly gained from being in an offside position to put Garcia under pressure. 

"The referee told us that Eric wanted to play the ball and that kills the offside," man of the match Sergio Busquets told Spanish television after the game. 

"But really he wanted to play the ball because it would’ve reached Mbappe, who was in an offside position. It doesn't make sense.”

Spain rallied and almost found a leveller. Oyarzabal and Mikel Merino both forced late saves from Loris as France won the Nations League trophy.
