Ferran Torres returns to Spanish national team after Asensio, Olmo injuries

Following the injuries of Dani Olmo and Marco Asensio in the match against Georgia, Luis de la Fuente has chosen Ferran Torres as their replacement in the Spanish national team, despite his strong start to the season with Barcelona.

Both Marco Asensio and Dani Olmo couldn't complete the game against Georgia in Tbilisi. They were substituted due to physical discomfort in the 43rd minute of the first half, and after medical checks, their participation against Cyprus is not feasible. They will be replaced in the squad by Ferran Torres and Yeremi Pino.

Ferran Torres, who hails from Foios, had not received a call-up to the Spanish national team since the last World Cup in Qatar. He was not included in any of the three call-ups made by Luis de la Fuente since he took charge of the national team. The other player selected by the Spanish coach is Yeremi Pino, a forward from Villarreal, who was present in the last international break, the one for the Nations League. Both players will travel together from Valencia to Madrid.

The Barcelona player was training in Valencia and will travel to the Ciudad del Futbol in Las Rozas as quickly as possible. His impressive start to the season with FC Barcelona earned him a return to the national team, having scored two goals in three matches, accumulating 63 minutes of play.

Ferran Torres has played 35 matches for the Spanish national team, scoring 15 goals: six in the Nations League, four in World Cup qualifiers, two in the World Cup, two in the European Championship, and one in friendlies. Therefore, nine months later, Ferran Torres is back with the national team.

With this decision, De la Fuente will once again have 24 players available for the match against Cyprus on Tuesday (20:45h). Therefore, the national team coach will have to make another selection for this new European Championship 2024 qualifying match, as only 23 players can be included in the squad. Abel Ruiz was the one excluded for the game against Georgia.
