A thriller in Zagreb saw Croatia earn the win, meaning it goes down to Sunday's game at Wembley

Spain blew the chance to reach the Nations League final four in a gripping defeat by Croatia, which leaves Group A4 wide open.

England and Croatia have four points each, behind Spain on six, and they face each other at Wembley on Sunday. The winner goes through, or La Roja do if that is a draw.

Andrej Kramaric sent Croatia ahead after a Sergi Roberto mistake but Dani Ceballos equalised from Isco’s pass.

Tin Jedvaj headed Croatia ahead from Luka Modric’s brilliant cross but Sergio Ramos equalise from the penalty spot after Sime Vrsjalko was penalised harshly for handball.

Jedvaj popped up again in the final stages to bag the winner at the back post, frustrating Luis Enrique’s side.

"We deserved more, but for one reason or another it wasn’t possible and now we have to hope England and Croatia draw on Sunday because we don’t depend on ourselves any more," said Sergio Busquets.

"It was a very hard group with strong sides, who came in form from the World Cup. We were the best team in the group but our errors have cost us."

Lucho agreed the group, which pitted Spain against the World Cup runners up and semi-finalists, was tough.

"This shows it was a very, very difficult group and that we didn’t expect these two defeats (the other by England). But until the end we’ll have a chance (of qualifying)," said Lucho.

"Football is like this, we have to accept it. The first goal is from a mistake we made, the second from a set piece and the third in a situation that was desperate for both teams."
