Zidane 'votes' for Cristiano Ronaldo to win the Ballon d'Or

Despite his poor form, the Madrid coach still thinks the Portuguese forward should claim the prize

Zinedine Zidane is clear on who should win the Ballon d’Or. Or at least he is in public. Zidane ‘votes’ for his Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo, who was the clear favourite a few months ago but is behind Lionel Messi in recent polls.

In a press conference previewing the weekend’s game against Alaves, Zidane assured that Ronaldo “clearly” deserves the prize because of his work throughout 2016, while he also refused to give importance to the Portuguese’s current dry streak in front of goal.

“Above all, what’s valued is what’s been done in the whole year. Cristiano is at such a high level that when he doesn’t score people on the outside are surprised. In 2016 he has done a lot, not just individually, but collectively. He clearly deserves the Ballon d’Or,” the French coach said.

ANGRY

Zidane also doesn’t think a lack of goals is having a negative effect on Ronaldo:  “He doesn’t seem anxious, but possibly angry. He wants to score goals and that’s normal. He’s unique in what he has done and what he does. He has to live with [the criticism], it’s what the phenomenal players have to do.”
