Atletico and Real Madrid fans clashed before the semi-final second leg

Police had to get involved as the tension spilled over in the Spanish capital

The atmosphere prior to the Champions League semi-final match between Atletico and Real Madrid was quite tense. Serious incidents occurred between the fans and the police in the surroundings of the Vicente Calderón before the game.

Fans had congregated in the streets adjacent to the stadium and there were several incidents in which the police had to intervene. Footage has emerged of supporters throwing objects at the police; bottles were thrown and some fans had to be attended to after receiving different blows to the body. For now, it has been reported that there have been 11 wounded. It was a real battle ground.

The clashes occurred practically at the gates of the Vicente Calderón, which in turn created some moments of genuine tension due to the large number of fans that were involved.

Security is very high ahead of the game -- which Real go into with a 3-0 lead -- as the meeting is considered high risk, but that has not been enough to avoid such incidents in the build up to a match which will decide which Madrid side meets Juventus in the final in Cardiff next month.
