After FC Barcelona won last night, coupled with a draw for Atletico Madrid, it was vitally important Zinedine Zidane got it right against the league’s bottom team. He couldn’t have asked for a better - and easier - start to his night.

Marcelo’s deep cross found Karim Benzema, he unselfishly knocked it across the six-yard box for Rodrygo Goes to put Madrid ahead after just six minutes. By the take some supporters had sat back down in their seats, it was 2-0. Benzema was once again the creator as he drove inside the box before drilling it across for Toni Kroos to glide it into the far corner.

The clock had just ticked over the 20-minute mark when Soriano brought down Eden Hazard in the area. Sergio Ramos stepped up and saw his effort saved from 12 yards. However, his blushes were spared when VAR ruled that the Leganes goalkeeper had unfairly come off his line. Ramos got a second chance and made no mistake. 3-0. Goodnight.

As the game moved into the second half, Benzema could and perhaps should have got on the scoresheet before doing so from the penalty spot. That made it 4-0 with twenty minutes left on the clock.

Zidane saw this as the perfect time to throw Luka Jovic into the fray and look to end his goalscoring struggles. And it worked.

Dani Carvajal sent in an inviting cross and Jovic rose highest to round off an easy night for Zidane’s men. They moved back into second place and one point behind leaders Barça.
