Nacho Fernandez’s 78th minute header was enough to split the teams at the Jose Zorilla stadium.
Casemiro had a goal disallowed for offside in the first half, and Sergi Guardiola had one cancelled at the death for the same reason, both fair decisions.
Outside of that there were very few opportunities for either side.
Madrid won by grinding it out, with no style or verve but with their own conviction that a goal would come at some point.
They are three points ahead of Barcelona now, after 21 games. The pressure is on Quique Setien, who is still trying to get his team to play how he wants.
“No ground is easy to go to and all teams are showing that,” said Sergio Ramos.
“They were an opponent who it was going to be hard to play against, they close up well and it was hard to create space.
“In the second we found the space more and finally Nacho was able to get a goal. We leave happy with three points and as leaders.”
