Real Madrid have beaten Barcelona's 39 game unbeaten streak set in 2016, going 40 matches without defeat.

They drew 3-3 at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan against Sevilla in the Copa del Rey (winning 6-3 on aggregate to reach the quarter-finals) with a last minute goal from Karim Benzema helping them make history.

The last time Madrid were defeated was against Wolfsburg in 2016 when they were beaten 2-0 in the Champions League, in Germany.

Barcelona avoided defeat between October 17 2015 and March 20, 2016. It was Real Madrid who beat them, winning 2-1 at Camp Nou on April 2, 2016 to end the Catalans' charge.

The all time record in Europe is Zagreb, who went 45 games unbeaten between November 2014 and September 2015. Madrid's 40 equals Nottingham Forest's 40, set between 1977 and 1978. They are three short of Juventus' 43.
