Los Blancos are in a fight for a Champions League spot

They've never been more than 21 points off top spot in their history

Real Madrid are close to breaking a record they don't want to break. Los Blancos have drifted out of the race for the title and end the first half of the season -- despite having a game in hand to come against Leganes -- 19 points behind leaders Barcelona. They're closer to the drop than the top

After another unexpected defeat, this time against Villarreal, the squad themselves admitted that the target for now has to be to qualify for the Champions League next season. Toni Kroos was clear on that. Zinedine Zidane's side are fourth with 32 points, just one more than Villarreal. They're 16 points above the relegation zone.

In addition, and according to the Twitter account @2010MisterChip, Madrid are close to breaking a record for being off the pace in La Liga. The furthest Madrid have been from top spot in their history is 21 points. That was in the 33rd round of fixtures in 1995-96 (Atletico were leaders).

Therefore, if Madrid lose to Depor and Barça win at Real Betis, they would break that mark this weekend.
