Real Madrid 5-2 Celta Vigo: Camavinga nets as Blancos go back home

The Santiago Bernabeu hosted a game for the first time in a year and a half

It was the homecoming Real Madrid dreamed of, even if Celta Vigo did their best to stop it.

Eventually Carlo Ancelotti’s side had enough to wrestle away the three points from the Galicians, back at the Santiago Bernabeu 560 days after they last played there.

The famous old stadium has been undergoing renovation - and still is - so it didn’t look too different, apart from the roof structure starting to be put in place.

Neither did Real Madrid, in terms of the starting line up, apart from in defence. The old guard, Modric, Casemiro, Benzema, still lead the team and so it proved on Sunday night.

Santi Mina put the visitors ahead inside four minutes, but Benzema levelled.

However Franco Cervi’s brilliant flick hit the post and the Celta man was quick to fire the rebound home, restoring the visitors’ lead.

Benzema headed home Madrid’s second from Miguel Gutierrez’s cross and then Vinicius Jr hit his fourth goal of the season to put the hosts in front for the first time.

Eduardo Camavinga came on for his debut after joining from Rennes and tapped home from close range in the 72nd minute, with Benzema adding the fifth at the death after Vinicius was felled in the box.

Madrid move back top of the table, level on 10 points with Valencia and Atletico Madrid.
