Carlo Ancelotti's side are through and progress as group winners after this Scottish romp

Real Madrid got back to winning ways in emphatic fashion against Celtic, with a 5-1 Champions League thrashing.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side had five different goalscorers as they booked top spot in Group F, leaving Leipzig in second place after their 4-0 win at Shakhtar Donetsk.

There were three first half penalties, two to Madrid, and it was those two that were scored.

Two Celtic handballs allowed Luka Modric and then Rodrygo to net from the spot, while Thibaut Courtois saved from Josip Juranovic at the other end.

Vinicius fired over a good chance but soon had his goal, albeit not before Marco Asensio bagged the third.

In-form Fede Valverde rattled in the fifth from the edge of the box, with Jota getting one back as a consolation for the Scots.

"It's never nice to concede two such soft penalties so early on," Celtic stopper Joe Hart told BT Sport.

"The first half was even apart from that I thought big Courtois had a good game.

"We came here to be positive and put our best foot forward and we tried to attack. They're the kind of team that if you leave gaps they're ruthless.

"I've not had a lot to do apart from pick the ball out of my net five times, which is never nice. Those two penalties set the tone, though."
