Two Cristiano Ronaldo goals after Gareth Bale’s opener ensured Zinedine Zidane’s side picked up the three points to keep their noses ahead of Valencia in third.

Getafe, who had Loic Remy sent off, had briefly made it 2-1 when Francisco Portillo scored from the penalty spot.

Madrid took the lead when Bale swept home his 11th goal of the season from inside the area before Ronaldo’s 300th La Liga goal doubled the home side’s lead on the stroke of half-time.

Getafe’s task was made even bigger when Remy received his marching orders early in the second half after receiving his second yellow card.

However, the 10 men kept going and were awarded a penalty when Nacho Fernandez fouled Jorge Molina. Portillo stroked home to give the away side hope.

Ronaldo almost restored Madrid’s two-goal lead immediately, but saw a headed goal ruled out for a push and was then denied by a brilliant Emiliano Martinez save.

The Portugal forward did eventually wrap up proceedings, though, scoring his second of the night and his 16th league goal of the season with 10 minutes to go.

Madrid now turn their attention to the Champions League. They travel to Paris Saint-Germain in midweek with a 3-1 lead from the first leg of their round of 16 tie.
