Real Madrid 2-1 Villarreal: Los Blancos wrap up La Liga title

Zidane's side won their 10th game in a row to win first title since 2017

Real Madrid beat Villarreal 2-1 on Thursday to win their first league title since 2017 and the 34th in the club's history.

A goal in each half from Karim Benzema moved them into a two-goal lead, with Villarreal making a late fight of it when Vicente Iborra pulled one back.

Madrid knew that a win would guarantee them the title with one game to spare, so Barcelona's 2-1 loss at home to Osasuna proved irrelevant in the end.

Zinedine Zidane's side have been the best since the league resumed in June following the pause caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The win against Villarreal was their 10th in a row, while Barca were held to draws by Sevilla, Celta Vigo and Atletico before losing to Osasuna.

Zidane's side have been much more consistent, with players like Benzema and Sergio Ramos playing a big role, while they've also had some help from VAR.

Madrid have now won 34 league titles in Spain, while Barcelona have won 26. It's just the third Los Blancos have won in the last decade, with Barça winning six and Atletico one.
