Real Madrid 2-0 Frankfurt: Alaba and Benzema seal UEFA Super Cup glory

| sport

Madrid began the season with another trophy in Helsinki on Wednesday

David Alaba and Karim Benzema were on target as Real Madrid beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 to win the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday.

Alaba opened the scoring in the first half, turning home after Casemiro had kept Benzema's knockdown alive.

Benzema then rounded off the win as he moved clear of Raul as Madrid's second top scorer ever with his 324th goal for the club.

Madrid now turn their attention to LaLiga, which begins on Sunday with a trip to newly promoted Almeria.

Carlo Ancelotti named the same side that beat Liverpool in the Champions League final to face Europa League winners Frankfurt.

Los Blancos always looked in control in Helsinki, although Thibaut Courtois had to be alert early on, and took a deserved lead just before the break.

The German side failed to deal with a corner, Benzema's knockdown was headed back across goal by Casemiro and Alaba turned home.

Casemiro hit the bar after the break and Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp made some fine stops before Benzema sealed the win.

The Frenchman converted Vinicius' cross to move clear of Raul in Madrid's history, with only Cristiano Ronaldo (451 goals) now ahead of him.
